The Crossed Bisons

The European bison (Bison bonuses) or wisent, can weigh up to 2200 lbs and would have been a formidable presence in Paleolithic times. This Crossed Bison diptych was found under an overhang in the most remote part of the Nave Hall in Lascaux. The crossed hind legs create the illusion that one bison is closer than the other creating a visual depth which was particularly advanced for the time.
